Lesson 1: Separate is Never Equal
We read the story of Sylvia Mendez called Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatium Ask your student: - Who is Sylvia Mendez - What is a the difference between a bias and a stereotype Lesson 2: Two Speeches We listen to 2 different speeches from important leaders in US history. We compare and contrast what they say about an inclusive and just America. Ask your student: - What does it mean to be inclusive? - What does justice mean? Lesson 3: One More Speech Students are tasked to write as speech as the President of Salem Elementary to inspire others to be inclusive, just, and equitable. Ask your student: - What did you choose to write your speech on? - Can I see your speech? Lesson 4: "Hello Salem, your student body president here..." Student share their speeches with the class Ask your student: - What did you like about the speeches you heard in class today? - What stuck with you? |

Lesson 1: Breaking the Chain
This unit (3 lessons) is required by WCPSS in the 5th grade guidance curriculum. Students learn about breaking the chain of negative behaviors from negative thoughts and feelings.
