We read the story Malala's Magic pencil by Malala Yousafazi and introduce the concept of stereotypes and bias Ask your student: -What is the difference between stereotypes and bias? - What were some examples of stereotypes discussed in class? Lesson 2: Stereotype Breakers We learn about how to respond to stereotypes we hear and how we can bust stereotypes Ask your student: - What stereotype do you bust? Lesson 3: Player Card- Choose your Labels Student create a player card with their prefered labels and stereotype busters. Ask your student: - What are some of the labels you choose for your players card? - Do you want to show me your card? (google classroom) Lesson 4: Freedom Summer We read the book Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles. Ask your student: - What surprised you about the end of the story? |

This unit (3 lessons) is required by WCPSS in the 4th grade guidance curriculum. Students learn about coping skills and strategies to calm the mind and body. Lesson 3: Relaxation Ask your student: - How does the Serene Starfish skill work? - Can you show me the Tight Like an Angry Shark/ Loose Like a Jellyfish skill?
