Unit 2- Accepting and Appreciating Others
ApLesson 1: Acceptance
Ask your student - What does it mean to 'accept others'? We use the definition of appreciating and celebrating others for who they are. Lesson 2: The Other Side We read the book The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson. Ask your student: - What did you think the fence in the story symbolized? We have a long discussion in class about if it symbolizes friendship or a barrier. There is no right answer. Lesson 3: Making others Feel Accepted We read the story My Name is Sangoel by Karen Lynn Williams. Ask your student: - What are ways that we can help others (specifically new students) feel accepted and appreciated in our school? Lesson 4: Understanding Barriers We read the story Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts. Ask your student: - What are 'barriers' that make people feel different? - What can we do to recognize and help take down these 'barriers'? |
Unit 3- Coping Skills and Identifying Feelings
Lesson 1: Ride the Wave
This unit required by WCPSS in the 3rd grade guidance curriculum. Students learn about coping strategies for different emotions. Ask your student: - Can you describe how the wave represents the range of a feeling? Lesson 2: Think, Feel, Act This lesson explains how our thoughts, feelings, and actions are like dominoes and have a cause effect relationship with each other. Ask you student: - What causes us to head into rough seas sometimes? - How are our thought connected to our behaviors? Lesson 3: "I Can High Five" Student identify the following for when they are upset: - I can do... - I can be... - I can think... - I can ask... - I can say.. Ask your student about their High Five Lesson 4: Calming Skills for Test Taking We play a game to prepare for what to expect for the EOGs as well as talk about strategies to feel calm. Ask your student: - How are you feeling about taking the EOG this year? - Is there anything we can do at home to help you feel calm? |
